Colors of Courage 5K

The Colors of Courage 5K is a community-driven fundraising event supporting patients at the Lawson Cancer Center at Pikeville Medical Center. The goal was to increase participation, elevate the event experience and maximize funds raised for cancer care services. The 5K has been in existence for many years, but for the three years I led, the event averaged 350 participants annually and generated several thousand dollars to directly benefit patients.

My Role: I served as the primary lead for both marketing and event execution, overseeing the project from concept to completion. I acted as the central point of contact for all internal teams and external partners, ensuring seamless coordination across every aspect of the event.

Results

Impact: This event raised critical funds and created a meaningful, supportive space for patients, families and the community. My leadership, with help from a great team, ensured a professional, well-organized experience that participants looked forward to year after year.


Strategy & Execution

  • I developed a cohesive visual identity for the event and executed all marketing materials, including:

    • Brochures and registration packets

    • Social media campaigns

    • Website landing page

    • Event signage and branded collateral

    My approach focused on creating an uplifting, community-centered tone that honored cancer patients while encouraging participation.


  • I managed all logistics and communication between key stakeholders, including:

    • Race timing company

    • City of Pikeville officials

    • Pikeville City Police

    • Lawson Cancer Center team

    • Community Outreach Department

    • Marketing & PR Department

    • Legal

    This required detailed planning, scheduling and consistent communication to ensure compliance, safety and smooth operations, while keeping it fun.

  • Registration Management

    I oversaw all pre-registration and day-of-event sign-ups, including:

    • Acting as liaison for participant inquiries

    • Managing registration data and software

    • Training staff and volunteers on check-in systems

    This ensured an efficient and user-friendly experience for participants.

    Event Production

    I led the full setup and execution of the event, including:

    • Coordinating event layout (tables, tents, water stations)

    • Designing and installing signage, banners and décor

    • Creating a custom photo backdrop and branded frame prop

    • Managing on-site logistics and troubleshooting in real time

    I also supervised all staff and volunteers, ensuring clear roles and smooth operations throughout the event.

    In addition to behind-the-scenes leadership, I served as the event emcee, engaging participants, maintaining energy, and guiding the event program.
