Lung Cancer Screening Initiative
The Lung Cancer Screening Initiative was designed to increase early detection of lung cancer through low-dose CT screenings, with a focus on improving provider awareness, streamlining internal processes, and educating the community. The campaign required strong alignment between clinical teams, IT infrastructure, and public-facing communications to drive both referrals and patient participation.
My Role: I led public relations and communications efforts for the initiative, acting as a connector between clinical teams, external partners, and internal departments. My role focused on amplifying the program’s visibility while also supporting operational alignment within the Grants Department behind the scenes.
Results:
Increased number of lung cancer screenings
Higher rate of early-stage cancer detection
Improved provider awareness and engagement
Enhanced coordination between departments and systems
Impact: By aligning public relations with clinical strategy and operational improvements, this initiative elevated lung cancer screening as a priority within both the provider community and the public. The result was not only increased participation but also earlier diagnoses, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to proactive, life-saving care.
Strategy & Execution
-
I worked closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure a unified approach, including:
Lawson Cancer Center and Radiology departments
Primary care providers across the region
External partner: Association of Community Cancer Centers
I also coordinated with IT teams to align communication efforts with system-level implementation.
-
Recognizing that provider buy-in was critical, we organized targeted educational initiatives, including:
Seminars for primary care providers on screening guidelines and eligibility
A featured speaking engagement with Dr. Gieske, who addressed real-world challenges and best practices
These efforts helped bridge knowledge gaps and encouraged consistent referral patterns.
-
To support long-term success, I facilitated collaboration between clinical and IT teams to:
Discuss integration of lung cancer screening protocols into the electronic health record (EHR) system
Improve referral workflows and tracking capabilities
Ensure a more seamless experience for both providers and patients
-
I developed and executed a comprehensive PR strategy to raise awareness and drive participation, including:
Writing and distributing press releases announcing the initiative
Creating news articles for the hospital website highlighting the importance of screening
Developing scripts for video content and campaign messaging
Organizing and managing video production shoots to support storytelling and outreach
The messaging focused on early detection, patient outcomes, and accessibility of screening.
